The Story of the Mermaid
David Hobson
Having finished the 2004 season with, what I thought was a fairly good looking boat, I wanted to do something different for 2005. I decided that all the boats were similar to racing cars - basically moving billboards - couple of stripes or shapes and company logo's. I wanted to turn the boat into a work of art! Something to make people stop and take a second look!

So I decided to commission Ian Sanderson, an old friend and well known photographer (you may well have seen lot's of his work in shops like Athena). We decided upon a Mermaid theme - very nautical and hopefully relevant. I began a search for a model to be our Mermaid and represent the team at race meetings throughout the season. Having done a search we recruited our mermaid, booked the shoot with Ian - who lives and works in Paris and everything was set. Then just as we were heading to Paris for the shoot our model goes sick! A couple of calls later and Ian has sorted it - we agree to use a local Parisian model, Chloe. Having not seen any pictures of Chloe it was a huge leap into the unknown, but knowing Ian I was sure he would come up with the goods!
We got into Paris, and were met by Ian and Nathalie, his girlfriend and manager. Off to the studio, stopping on route at a shop that sold shells (and all sorts of other strange bits). We got back to Ian's apartment and studio to meet the assembled team of hairdresser, make up artist and Chloe. Whilst Chloe was made-up and hair done, Ian and I discussed the layout of the boat, and how we need the images to sit.
With the photo's done we had a pleasant evening in Paris, before starting work on the images the next day. A plan was emerging! Ian was not happy with the idea of a plain and simple mermaid - he wanted (and got) images that would provoke a reaction. These are the images you see on the boat and on the web site. In addition to these images Ian has produced a limited edition of 4 stunning prints in black and white. Signed copies of these prints are available directly from Ian.

The whole shoot was a fantastic experience. Having never been involved in a proper shoot it is amazing to see the work involved in producing the right image. It is also funny how many people say they wish they had been at the shoot, with Chloe being nude. I can tell everyone right now that it isn't sexy at all! You very quickly forget the nudity and just get on with the job. And it is amazing how hard the model has to work in a shoot.
The finished images were sent on to Danny Karrouze at Global Graphics. And I think the resultant pictures are a testament to everyone involved.
I hope you like the finished result. I hope it has achieved what I set out to do - turn the boat into a work of art. And make you stop in your tracks and take a second look.
